The sessions will begin on Wednesday, February 4, and will run every Wednesday from 1pm to 4pm at The Cluntergate Centre in Horbury.

The initiative builds on the hospice’s existing dementia support services, which currently operate over three days each week at the hospice site.

By taking the service into the community, Wakefield Hospice hopes to reach more people who may find it difficult to travel, while extending tailored care beyond its walls.

To access the service, attendees must have a confirmed diagnosis of dementia. Referrals are open, meaning individuals, family carers or healthcare professionals can make contact directly.

Ahead of joining the sessions, home visits will take place throughout January to assess each person’s needs, interests and abilities.

They will be led by Wakefield Hospice’s Admiral Nurse, Debby Veigas, alongside the hospice’s dementia outreach team.

Debby said:

“These sessions offer support for the person living with dementia whilst providing advice and practical support to family carers."

“We recognise that each person who lives with dementia has their own specific needs, and with this new service we aim to provide bespoke care and support, whilst providing back vital hours to family carers.”

The service builds on Wakefield Hospice’s existing dementia support, which currently runs over three days each week at the hospice.

By bringing the service into the community, the hospice hopes to reach more people who may struggle to travel.

Debbie went on to say:

“Meeting the person living with dementia and their family carers allows us to understand their interests, hobbies and abilities. That means we can match people to the right session and tailor activities so they get the very best from the support we offer.”

The sessions cost £30 per attendee. Home visits will take place throughout January to assess individual needs before joining the service.
