The family of a 19-year-old man who died in a crash on the A1 in County Durham last week have paid tribute to a “bright” and “dearly loved” young man.

Dylan Martin Lawson, from West Yorkshire, was killed in the early hours of Wednesday 2nd July after a one-vehicle collision near Coxhoe.

Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway at around 2.20am but, despite their best efforts, Dylan was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a moving tribute, his mum Susan said:

“Dylan was the one that made me a mother and was the start of our family.

“He was a very intelligent, bright, quiet young man who is dearly loved by us all, and made me so, so proud.”

She described him as an “amazing big brother” to his sister Lydia, adding:

“Dylan was loved more than he can ever know. We will never forget him or ever stop loving him.”

His dad Steven said Dylan had achieved a high score in MENSA and won several awards for outstanding achievement at school.

“Whatever he chose to pursue in life, he always excelled,” he said.

Steven also shared how much Dylan enjoyed spending time outdoors and going to the gym with him on weekends.

“No time can ever replace the hole that has been taken,” he added. “But some day we will all meet again – so until then, rest in peace, my son. We love you always.”

Durham Police are continuing to investigate the collision and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage of the vehicle prior to the crash to come forward.
