Torch For Peace Visits Leeds On 25 Day Journey

Published 30th Sep 2015

A torch of humanity has passed through Leeds today - carried on foot from York!

Adam Holland and Rob Young - known as Marathon Man - are doing the 'walk for peace' to help resolve conflict in Kenya.

They set off from York on a 25 day journey to spread the word over towns, cities and villages, hoping to inspire everyone they meet on the way.

The campaign is global and the torch will go to the USA next, having originally come from Kenya.

Rob says "the project is concentrating on Kenya because there's a lot of problems going on in Rift Valley. It's about trying to bring some peace and hopefully when they can sustain some of that then we can move on to the next place and keep going... and hopefully create a better society not only for one country, but for many around the world."

The money raised is going towards peacekeepers and to unite tribes in schools to 'save lives through education and prosperity'.

UN figures show over 600 people have been killed and some 435,000 have been displaced by the violence since the start of 2014 – around half of them just this year alone.

But the goal is to bring people all over the globe together.

Rob said "for us it's about trying to unite lots of people, all the way along we're getting loads of people coming out to us. We had a seven year old wait on the street two hours to see us, it touches us to be able to have that effect."

Rob suffered abuse as a kid and was put into care - he's now broken the world record for the most marathons done in a year and the longest run without sleep.

He says he wants to bring hope to people - that whatever your background you can still achieve so much.

But he says the conflict is abroad doesn't compare with his past.

"When a child loses their family in somewhere like a war torn country you then have no parents, no-one to look after you and you go through the same situation, but they're in a much more dire situation than what I have ever been in."
