The number of people experiencing depression in West Yorkshire is rising
1 in 5 people in Yorkshire are experiencing depression
New research shows 1 in 5 people experienced depression in Yorkshire in March 2021.
Last year, the national average was 1 in 10.
Healthy Minds Calderdale say they've seen an increase during the pandemic and pre-pandemic. They feel one of the factors is the waiting time for people with depression.
During the pandemic they've continued to help people through zoom support groups, telephone calls and workshops to develop skills to manage and improve their mental health.
Nicola Abel, from Healthy Minds Calderdale said:
"If that support isn't available, the depression can become worse, it's not just about depression, it then has an effect on people's ability to function day to day.
"Without intervention, that impacts on physical health and wellbeing, it's essential people have access to adequate support in a timely matter."
We have approached NHS England for a response.
