Tribute exhibition opens to Leeds venue which hosted Oasis and Nirvana
The Duchess was one of the major scenes for rock bands before it closed in 2000
A tribute exhibition has been unveiled to one of Leeds' most iconic music venues as part of a celebration of the city's music scene.
The Duchess of York, popularly known as The Duchess, was the site where some of the biggest rock stars would perform.
Oasis and Nirvana were just some of the largest names in pop and rock who had graced the stage of 71 Vicar Lane, which is now a furniture shop.
As part of a exhibition celebrating 60 years of Leeds' music scene, a mockup of the pub has been designed for the tribute at Leeds City Museum.
The exhibition, opening on Friday (October 10th) includes memories and stories from music lovers, venues and promoters celebrating the rich history of the city.
Leeds' music scene began back in 1965, with the opening of the Leeds Conservatoire before other iconic moments in the city began to spring up, including the establishment of the Futurama Festival and the rise of the Goth movement.
Tributes will also be paid to some of the city's most notable artists such as Utah Saints and Corinne Bailey Rae, who had stormed the charts through the decades.
Other highlights of the exhibition include a custom built guitar made by Utah Saints founder Jez Wilis, as well as violins used by Leeds-based band The Ukrainians.
Speaking on the exhibition, Esther Amis-Hughes from Leeds Museums and Galleries said the walkthrough was a fantastic nod to the city's history.
The past 60 years have been truly transformational for music in Leeds and have seen some iconic moments that will forever be part of the city’s history," she explained.
“I’ve been blown away by the passion, diversity, and power of the city to continue to be a source of inspiration through music, and this exhibition has shown me how brilliant people, doing what they love, can make a positive difference.
“I hope this exhibition gives people an insight into the power of music in bringing people together, no matter what genre or scene you enjoy."
