A teenage swimmer has died after getting into difficulty in a river.

West Yorkshire Police said the 17-year-old's body was recovered from the River Aire in Leeds in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The incident happened on a stretch of the river behind the Cardigan Fields leisure complex on Kirkstall Road in the city.

A spokesman said: "West Yorkshire Police received a report from the ambulance service shortly before 6.45pm last night (Tuesday) of a 17-year-old male having entered the River Aire near to Cardigan Fields, Kirkstall.

"Police attended the scene alongside West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

"At around 1.30am this morning (Wednesday) a body was recovered from the water. Inquiries are ongoing.''

A path down to the river behind a Nando's restaurant was closed to the public on Wednesday morning and guarded by a community support officer.

Our reporter at the scene described little other sign of the tragedy in the area, and that the stretch of the River Aire behind the retail park is heavily wooded.
