A Sunderland supporter has been banned from attending football matches for three years after racially abusing two Leeds United players.

Steven Patterson, a 68-year-old from Bishop Auckland, was fined £346, with court costs of £85 and a surcharge of £138.

He pleaded guilty to a racially aggravated offence when appearing before County and Durham Magistrates on Wednesday (November 27)

The offence took place on February 17 during the Leeds United v Sunderland Championship match at Elland Road.

Patterson was seen by officers making a monkey gesture towards Leeds players Ethan Ampadu and Largie Ramazani as they left the pitch following the game.

The referee reported the incident to the police, which led to Patterson being charged.

In a statement, the club have thanked police, and say "there is no room for racism in football or society".
