West Yorkshire's experienced winds of 74mph after Storm Dudley brought strong gusts, and left thousands of people in the North of England without power.

Heavy rain and strong winds caused power cuts on Wednesday evening, and a flood alert was in place along the Upper River Aire catchment.

The bad weather is expected to continue into Friday and the weekend, as Storm Eunice arrives in the UK.

Storm Dudley causes havoc on the rails

Rail passengers faced delays on services from Leeds last night, with both LNER and Northern warning of disruption.

Fallen trees have knocked out overhead lines, meaning replacement buses were running between a number of West Yorkshire's stations.

That disruption is expected to continue on Friday, with LNER urging passengers not to travel between Leeds, York and London.

Tickets for those journeys will be valid on Thursday's services instead.

Minimal reports of damage

There were minimal reports of damage in West Yorkshire, although the MP for Halifax said she'd had reports of fallen trees overnight.

Holly Lynch asked people to "only venture out" if it was absolutely necessary.

West Yorkshire Police said they were also getting a "lot of reports" of accidents on the roads, warning drivers of surface flooding and obstructions.

Meanwhile, experts recorded winds of 74mph at Emley Moor in Huddersfield.

These conditions will be followed on Friday by Storm Eunice which could be even more damaging, with stronger winds than Dudley, heavy snow and possible blizzard conditions.

Another amber warning has been issued, with the potential for stronger winds, and predictions that gusts could top 90mph in the South West and South Wales.

The Enviroment Agency has also warned of flooding in the South of England.
