The final phase of the new Smart Motorway near Wakefield will go live on Monday 1st February.

Drivers on the 7 mile stretch of the M1 between junction 39 Denby Dale and junction 42 Lofthouse interchange with M62, will benefit from the first all lane running motorway in the North, where the hard shoulder has been permanently converted to an extra lane.

The smart motorway uses the latest technology to monitor traffic levels and variable speed limits on overhead electronic signs to keep vehicles moving, improving the reliability of journeys.

The first phase of the scheme was opened in December between junction 39 Denby Dale and junction 41 Morley.

All four lanes opened to traffic between junctions 41 and 42 earlier this week but the speed limit has been fixed at 50mph while testing takes place on the technology.
