Leeds coach Brad Arthur pleased to see risks rewarded as Hull KR toppled
The Rhinos surged back from an eight-point half-time deficit to hand Rovers only their second loss of the campaign
Leeds head coach Brad Arthur praised his side's willingness to take risks after Lachlan Miller's stunning late try sealed a 14-8 win over Betfred Super League leaders Hull KR at Craven Park.
The Rhinos surged back from an eight-point half-time deficit to hand Rovers only their second loss of the campaign and move back to third place in the table, just two points behind second-placed Wigan.
Hailing Miller's length-of-the-field effort that sealed a brilliant seven-man move, Arthur said: "We have a lot of players who like to play a bit of footy and maybe we take chances here or there that other teams wouldn't take.
"They're backing each other to be brave and go after the game but it's not always going to go our way and when it doesn't you've got to be brave and strong and support each other in the defensive efforts."
Arthur remains adamant that his side are far from the finished article but nevertheless their eye-catching win over Rovers, who went into the game on a nine-game Super League winning streak, will underscore their re-emergence after two straight seasons without a play-off berth.
"I'm extremely proud," added Arthur, whose side will immediately move on to focus on Friday's Headingley clash with top six rivals St Helens.
"I saw a bit of belief in them during the week, and I sensed a bit of expectation, that they thought they'd come here and win.
"Even when were 8-0 down at half-time we weren't bad. We talked about how to beat them we had to be very, very good in the second half and we were.
"Last time we played them we had them with 10 minutes to go and should have won, but we just lacked that bit of composure. But we learned from it and we went after it tonight."
Rovers head coach Willie Peters made no excuses and admitted errors and indiscipline had cost his side dear in their bid to move six points clear at the top of the table.
The hosts spurned three clear try-scoring opportunities in the first half due to forward passes, and gifted Jake Connor a match-levelling penalty after Jared Waerea-Hargreaves was penalised for dissent at the play-the-ball.
"I thought we had a lot of opportunities in the first half and I was happy with it except for the execution," said Peters.
"That hurt us because we came out slow in the second half and they got on top. We had some ill discipline in there and came over the top of us in that back end.
"We had opportunities to put ourselves in a stronger position to win a game. If you don't do that it hurts you, especially in big games like that. We can't afford to do that like we've done in the past."
Peters, who confirmed Mikey Lewis will miss next week's trip to Leigh after failing a head injury assessment, also paid tribute to the resurgent Rhinos.
"Leeds were outstanding and they deserved it," added Peters. "I'm not taking anything away from them. I'm looking at what we could have controlled and that was execution of a couple of tries, but Leeds were the better side."
