Leeds Rhinos have removed Luke Gale as team captain.

It's in response to "behaviours not aligned to team trademarks" according to the Headingley side.

The 33 year old scrum-half was absent from the Rhinos' win over Salford on Friday, but club bosses say he will be available to Head Coach Richard Agar for Thursday evening's trip to Hull FC in Super League.

No details of what happened have been revealed by the club, but a statement from Gale himself says: "I would like to apologise to everyone connected to the club for my behaviour, which fell below the standards expected of our team."

"I will be making sure I give my absolute best every day to help the team achieve our goal this season."

The club says it considers the matter closed.
