Eight youths have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a large blaze in Bramley last night

The fire is believed to have broken out in a derelict building on Waterloo Lane at around 8.45pm.

10 crews from across West Yorkshire were called to the scene with appliances from Stanningley, Leeds, Cookridge, Killingbeck, Bradford, Fairweather Green & specialist officers from around the brigade attending the incident.

Roads in the area including Waterloo Lane, Town Street in Bramley, Broad Lane and Raynville Road were closed through the night.

Detective Inspector James Entwistle, of Leeds CID, said: "The building is very frail and we expect within the next seven days it will be taken down to protect the safety of the surroundings.

"We expect this may cause some disruption for the next several days and while this disruption is regrettable it is absolutely necessary to ensure public safety.

"We are working hard with partners to minimise the impact of this work and again, I want to thank residents for their co-operation during this time."

It lead to residents in the New Farnley, Churwell or Gildersome and surrounding areas being urged to keep doors & windows closed due to large amounts of smoke.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue now say they've downscaled the incident with two fire engines and an aerial appliance still at the scene.
