Yorkshire Wildlife Park is set to welcome a new polar bear, Brodie, this December as part of plans to temporarily move him from Scotland’s Highland Wildlife Park.

The youngest polar bear in Scotland is moving to Doncaster while building works take place in his habitat. Keepers from the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland are currently preparing Brodie for the relocation, with crate training said to be 'well underway.'

Darren McGarry, head of living collections at RZSS, said, “While we will miss Brodie while he’s on his holidays, it is great to be able to fully concentrate on the work needed in his habitat.

“His brother Hamish has been amazingly cared for by the team down at Yorkshire and we know they will look after Brodie with the same expertise. We can’t wait to see how they interact with each other when they are introduced in the future.”

Once settled into his new home at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Brodie will meet his older brother Hamish, who has been living in Doncaster for five years. Hamish relocated from Scotland in 2020 to join Project Polar, a specialised polar bear conservation and breeding programme based at the park.

Dr Charlotte MacDonald, animal director at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, said, “We are so looking forward to welcoming Brodie and seeing what he makes of his big brother Hamish and his other new friends here at Project Polar. It’ll be quite an experience for him!

“Personally, I am particularly excited as I used to work at RZSS and knew Brodie and Hamish’s mother, Victoria. She was a great mum to both boys.”

While Brodie relocates temporarily to Yorkshire, visitors to Highland Wildlife Park can still see the polar bears Arktos and Walker, whose habitat has recently undergone improvements.

Brodie’s move is seen as a great opportunity to reunite the brothers while ensuring essential updates to his previous habitat are carried out.

Visitors are encouraged to visit Brodie in Scotland before his departure on 30th November.
