Campaigners in Ilkley considering legal action over council over controversial plans
Campaigners in Ilkley say they're considering legal action after plans for a blanket, town-wide 20mph zone with around 130 speed humps were given the green light
Campaigners in Ilkley say they're considering legal action after plans for around 130 speed bumps have been given the go ahead.
They're part of a wider scheme - with includes a rollout of 20 mph zones across the town.
An extraordinary meeting was held last night by Ilkley Town Council, attended by over 250 residents.
Robbie Moore, Ilkley's MP said: "Labour, Lib Dem and Green Party councillors completely ignored Ilkley, forcing through plans for a blanket, town-wide 20mph zone with speed humps, voting to spend £87,500 of taxpayers money on the scheme.
"This was despite strong local opposition and public consultation results in which there was overwhelming opposition.
"91% of the public consultation respondents strongly opposed these plans. This local opposition was made clear to local Labour, Lib Dem and Green Councillors, including our Labour Ilkley Mayor Karl Milner and to Bradford Council time and time again - and yet they have refused to listen.
"I wrote to Ilkley’s Labour Mayor urging him to take on board the consultation results but clearly he wasn’t interested - using his casting vote to rush these plans through."
James Stretton from the Ilkley Roads Safety Action Group said: "We can look at a residents poll on this, we could hold a meeting and a parish meeting and call for a vote of no confidence in the council but we do have lawyers looking at legal challenges"
Robbie Moore said he'd support the campaigners, he told us: "Well I'll be writing again to Bradford Council, on this issue urging them to take on the results of the public consultation and I will be doing the same to Ilkley Town Council, they've obviously made a decision on this.
"I think it's right that the campaign group if they want to, which I think they will do, I'll be fully supporting that campaign group".
We have approached Ilkley Town Council for a comment.
