People in Kirklees are being asked to remain safe during the half term and to continue following covid restrictions.

Four schools in the area started surge testing last week, after an increase of the Indian variant, especially in younger people.

It's one of the hotspots in West Yorkshire, with Kirklees having around triple the rate of infections compared to the rest of the region.

Shabir Pandar, the leader of Kirklees council said:

"Washing your hands, make sure your face covering is worn at all times, and make sure you socially distance and basically just be vigilant.

"My advice is to be careful, my advice is to be cautious, stay safe, keep your family and loved ones safe, following the government guidance.

"We are doing surge testing, we are boosting up the vaccine programme, we are setting up pop-up clinics, we have community champions that actually go out into the communities that are hard to engage with and engage."

Meanwhile, leading scientists say the full lifting of restrictions in England should be delayed by another month because of the Indian variant.

Stage four of the Prime ministers road map is expected to happen on the 21st June.
