More than a hundred jobs are set to go at Leeds Bradford Airport.

It's because of the impact of coronavirus on the aviation industry.

Bosses at the airport say it's "regrettable" - and that they're safeguarding the business to survive the short-term crisis.

A spokesperson for LBA said: “We are deeply saddened to be consulting with a number of colleagues due to the impact of the global pandemic. Like most businesses, we are operating in extraordinary circumstances and this has led to some difficult decisions.

"The long-term prognosis for aviation is very different to the short-term constraints our business faces and we regrettably must act to safeguard the business.”

Rachel Dix, from the GMB Union, which represents members in the aviation industry, said: “Today's announcement that 108 jobs are at risk is devastating news but regrettably not unexpected in the absence of meaningful Government intervention.

“The lack of flights today mirrors the limited movement of passengers in March of this year.

“GMB has been calling on the Government to deliver a bespoke financial package for the aviation sector from day one. Seven months on and they are still sitting on their hands.

“We will work closely with the airport and our members to do all we can to save every hour of employment possible, but the Government has to step up and work with us to protect these jobs now.

“Time is running out.”
