North Leeds Parents Push For New School

Published 9th Jul 2015

North Leeds needs a new school.

That's what campaigners from the Fair Access group in the city are calling for.

They've met with council bosses who have agreed that more places need to be available. It’s after many families were left without their top five choice of school.

Nicola Dowd is from the group in Roundhay and says they can’t keep adding children to the current schools.

“Bulge classes are a temporary solution - they’re not ideal but they do the job in the short term, but it’s not a sustainable solution.

“You can’t impact too much on the children who are already at the school either, because obviously it’s important that their education doesn’t suffer by these schools just adding on, adding on, adding on all the time - so we need a proper solution that’s not a patchwork .“

She adds that the school needs to respond to a growing city.

“The birth rate is going up every single year so the city is growing. There’s always going to be a need for more school places. The knock on will be primary school places at the moment, it’ll be secondary school places at some point in the future.”
