Blanket of poppies unveiled at Normanton Town Hall ahead of Remembrance Day

A blanket of poppies has been unveiled at a West Yorkshire town hall to remember the lives lost in wars around the world.
Hundreds of people in Normanton knitted individual poppies which were then stitched together as part of a community-wide project.
The craftwork was attached to the railings outside Normanton Town Hall on Sunday to mark the season of Remembrance.
The project was the idea of Normanton town councillors Alison Bones and Carol Appleyard, both former mayors of the town, who were inspired by similar works at Selby Abbey and Christ Church Halton, in Leeds.
Alison said: “It’s been wonderful to see how far this project has spread, reaching old and young, working in their own homes to create something that unites this town in commemoration and remembrance of all those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
“We’re excited to see it displayed for all to see.”
Kits for knitting the poppies were given out to community groups, residential homes and households.
Over 1,000 were then collected and carefully stitched by a team of volunteers.
A special topper was also created for the postbox in Normanton town centre.
The volunteers were helped at the unveiling by cadets from the Normanton-based Yorkshire North and West E Company Rifles.
