Leeds "not cutting back on gritting" despite cost-of-living crisis
Some councils are warning they may have to scale back gritting, due to tight budgets
Leeds City Council is not cutting back on gritting, despite the cost-of-living crisis, the local authority's lead on transport is telling us today.
Back in June, according to the County Council Networks, some areas warned they could have to make in-year reductions to services and cancel or delay repairs to local roads and infrastructure as spiralling inflation adds over £1.5bn to their costs.
Cllr Helen Hayden, the Executive Board Member for Climate Change, Transport and Sustainable Development in Leeds said: "For what it would have saved, we didn't think it was worth it, in terms of keeping people safe, keeping the city moving, keeping people going to schools and hospitals. It's really important that our road network is functioning properly."
Not all roads are gritted when it's icy, therefore, the council have filled grit bins for people to do it themselves.
