More digital advertising displays could bring in an extra £400,000 a year for the cash-strapped council.

Leeds City Council is set to extend its contract with a media company which provides the displays for bus shelters, shopping centres and high streets.

Clear Channel UK already has permission to install the units around the city centre.

An expanded contract means the company could apply to display advertising across a wider area, including in town and district centres.

The extra income would help the council deal with a multi-million pound budget deficit.

A council report said: “Most of the new displays which form part of the contract with the council will be digital rather than traditional posters.

“The intention of this expansion is for a reasonable spread of units to avoid a concentration in one area.

“It could eventually generate an additional £400,000 per year.”

Between 60-80 more screens, known as “six-sheet” displays, could be installed under the revised contract.

The report said: “This is one of a range of similar contracts that the council holds with media partners.

“Each of the screens is subject to a robust planning and highways process.”

The deal with Clear Channel will also be extended for another two years, bringing the value of the contract to around £5.3m up until March 2033.

The council has estimated it will receive an extra £213,000 per year in rental income from the extra displays, along with an additional £187,000 share of the advertising revenue.

The report said extending the contract would help make up for around two years of reduced advertising income during the Covid pandemic.

It said: “This two-year extension compensates for those two years, while providing Clear Channel with a stronger financial incentive to install new displays.”
