A shopping centre in Leeds has been evacuated following a fire at a supermarket.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were called to the Merrion Centre at around 10:30am on Thursday (February 15).

It's believed the fire broke out in Morrisons.

Police and ambulance crews were also seen outside the shopping centre.

A cordon was lifted around two hours later, however some council offices will remain closed for the rest of the day.

Leeds City Council said: "Please be aware that due to a fire in the Merrion Centre, Merrion House will be closed for the rest of today.

"This includes face-to-face operation of the Community Hub, Leeds Housing Options and Registrars."

In a statement posted on social media, a spokesperson for the shopping centre said: "Following an incident at Morrisons at the Merrion Centre we can confirm that as a precautionary measure, both the supermarket and Merrion House have been evacuated.

"We are working closely with West Yorkshire emergency services to ensure all necessary measures are taken for the safety and well-being of our customers and staff.

"Whilst Morrisons has temporarily closed, we expect this to reopen shortly and would like to confirm that the rest of the Merrion Centre remains fully open and operational."
