A man has died following a 'pre-planned' police operation near the M62 in West Yorkshire.
A man has died following a 'pre-planned' police operation near the M62 in West Yorkshire.
The incident occurred during near junction J24 at Ainley Top at around 6pm last night. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said 5 people have been arrested.
No officers were injured in the incident, the spokesman said.
Sources have named the man shot dead as 27-year-old Mohammed Yassar Yaqub. Police are yet to confirm any further details about the operation. The force said it had informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission and was fully co-operating'' with the watchdog's investigators. Slip roads at the junction remain closed while the scene is examined.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said:
"Around 6pm on Monday January 2 during a pre-planned policing operation near to the M62 in Huddersfield a police firearm was discharged and a man has died."
"The slip roads east and west bound at junction 24 of the M62 remain closed."
"An immediate referral has been made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission who are in attendance in West Yorkshire and West Yorkshire Police are fully cooperating with their investigation."
A spokesman for the Independent Police Complaints Commission tweeted:
"A man has died following a @WestYorksPolice incident in Huddersfield at J24, M62 at 6pm this evening - IPCC investigators are at the scene."
"The IPCC understands the man died after a @WestYorksPolice firearm was discharged. Our investigators are attending post incident procedures." West Yorkshire PCC Mark Burns-Williamson said:
"`I was made aware of the firearms incident yesterday (02/01) resulting from a pre-planned police operation near the M62 at Huddersfield and have been fully updated by the Chief Constable. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have now launched an investigation following a mandatory referral to them and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage until more details are known."
