A man is in hospital with serious injuries after a collision on the M62 Westbound.

Police say that a pursuit entailed after a car failed to stop for them in the middle of the afternoon yesterday, around 2:55pm.

They had attempted to pull over the white Toyota Corolla on the M621 as it travelled towards the M62 at Birstall.

The vehicle, which was said to be travelling at speed on the M62 westbound carriageway, heading towards Manchester then collided with another car just before junction 24.

The man who was inside that Peugeot 306, is in a critical but stable condition.

Four females who were occupants in the Toyota have been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

West Yorkshire Police say:

"The eastbound carriageway of the M62 has now re-opened, but the westbound carriageway is likely to remain closed until the early hours of Sunday morning.

"The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been notified as is standard procedure with an incident of this nature."
