The court heard heart that Harriott had waited for Sandra to leave the house before driving onto the street and pulling up in front of her. He then attacked her with a long knife before making off in his vehicle.

Sandra was given emergency medical treatment at the scene but sadly died in hospital shortly afterwards.

Roger Harriott contacted police shortly after and handed himself in.

Detective Superintendent Alan Weekes, who led the investigation, said:

“This was a dreadful offence, in which a woman going about her everyday business was attacked and murdered in the street in broad daylight.

Harriott used a shocking level of violence in this pre meditated attack and inflicted injuries on Sandra which gave her no chance of survival.

She was a much loved and highly respected woman and her murder is a tragedy for those who knew her.

Our thoughts are with them as they continue to come to terms with what has taken place."
