Leeds Woman Fronts Clinical Trials Campaign

A campaign has been launched to raise awareness of cancer clinical trials.

St James Hospital saw the launch of Cancer Research UK’s campaign today with charity worker Nicki Embleton, from Leeds, being the face of the campaign, after suffering from cancer herself.

The charity runs clinical trials to save people lives and further improve research for a cure.

Nicky took part in one of the trials after she was diagnosed with breast cancer ten years ago, she said: “I think that when somebody tells you that you have cancer, I think most people think at that point ’am I going to die?’ and I certainly felt that as well.”

I remember going home and telling my family, that was really hard. To actually say the words but I was able to reassure them I was in the best hands here at Bexley wing at St James.”

The month long campaign hopes to raise awareness in Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham of how powerful clinical trials can be and how crucial they are in looking for new drugs to cure certain types of cancer.

Over 2,000 patients in Leeds took part in clinical trials last year and Cancer Research UK supports more than 250 clinical trials testing new treatments across the UK.

Nicky added: “I hope that when men and women see my picture around Leeds, it will help them understand that cancer does not have to be a death sentence anymore. Today, more and more people are surviving thanks to research, and cancer trials are crucial in helping to develop better and kinder treatments.”
