A new Tesco looks set to open after permission was granted for alterations to a city centre shop unit.

The supermarket chain said it was planning to convert a former Superdrug outlet at 13-14 Kirkgate.

Leeds City Council granted planning permission for Tesco to install airconditioning units and a new side door to the shop.

A planning officer’s report said the new supermarket would be surrounded by existing retail units on a busy pedestrianised street.

It said: “The unit under consideration as part of this application, formerly Superdrug, is currently vacant.

“The surrounding area is made up of predominantly retail uses including Flannels situated on the Briggate-Kirkgate junction and Kirkgate Market along Vicar Lane to the east.”

The report said alterations to the building, part of the City Centre Conservation Area, would not be visible to passing pedestrians.

It said: “It is considered that the proposal would not result in any harm to the character and visual amenity of the host building, the street scene and conservation area.”

A noise assessment was carried out and air conditioning and refrigeration units would be around 20m away from the nearest residential addresses on Fish Street.

The report said: “Therefore, the proposal would not adversely affect the living conditions of nearby properties, subject to a condition controlling noise levels.”
