Police urge residents to avoid Moortown after suspicious package found

West Yorkshire Police have reopened roads in the Moortown area of Leeds after a suspicious package was deemed to be given the all-clear.

Officers were alerted to the package on Harrogate Road in the Moortown suburb at around 9:25 on Saturday morning (September 14th).

Residents in the area were urged to be aware for potential dangers, while people from outside the suburb had been asked to avoid the area for some time.

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said: "Police are responding to reports of a suspicious package on Harrogate Road, Moortown, Leeds, close to the roundabout with the A6120 ring road.

Road closures are in place as the package is examined. Members of the public, including motorists, are advised to avoid the area due to congestion."

Eventually members of the military were drafted in to look at the package, as nearby homes close to where the package were found were evacuated as a precaution.

After being inspected by the Army EOD team, it was revealed that the suspicious package was proven to be a plastic bag with a military-style container.

As a result the area was deemed safe and the item was confirmed to be non-suspicious and properly disposed of.

West Yorkshire Police apologised for the disruption and thanked those in the area for their co-operation whilst the investigation took place.
