Leeds law firms gear up for Divorce Day
First Monday after Christmas break sees rise in enquiries about splitting up for solicitors
Now that Christmas is over - one in five married couples in Leeds say they're planning to split up. Local law firm Irwin Mitchell says the first Monday back after Christmas is now known as 'Divorce Day' - after appointments shot up by almost 30 percent this time last year. Carol Grundell's a partner there and says they've already seen an increase this time too, "In most cases it's not an easy decision for people to contact a divorce lawyer, but they see the New year as a chance to make a new start. "We've already been contacted by lots of new clients over December and also between Christmas and New Year. "It is a busier time than the rest of the year, while there will be a number of distressed calls from people who've suffered from problems such as extreme arguments and access to children. "The majority of people who contact us will do so calmly having been thinking about the decision for a while."
