A Leeds man who sped through a red light in Morley, hitting and seriously injuring a pedestrian, has been handed a prison sentence of more than three years.

30 year old Jake Syron, of Denshaw Grove, was going more than twice the 20mph speed limit in his Land Rover Evoque on Middleton Road on October 21 2023.

He overtook a car waiting at the lights, hitting a 35 year old man, leaving him with life threatening injuries.

He then drove away from the scene.

Syron was jailed for 39 months at Leeds Crown Court for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He's also been disqualified for 55 months and must retake his test once the ban expires.

Leading the investigation, PC Zac Hinchliffe of West Yorkshire Police said:

“Syron clearly felt that the rules of the road didn’t apply to him. He drove through a red light, on the wrong side of the road, at around a double the speed limit and his actions that night have had life-changing consequences.

“As a result of the collision the victim had to undergo multiple surgeries and still suffers from his injuries.

“I hope this sentence is a reminder to others about the catastrophic consequences that can come from driving dangerously. Speeding is one of the most common causes of fatal and serious injury collisions, known as the Fatal Five.

“We continue to educate all road users and take action against those who break the law as part of our Vision Zero ambitions to eradicate road deaths and serious injuries.”
