Kirklees residents can now dispose of household DIY waste for free at two of the council’s Household Waste and Recycling Centre’s (HWRC).

Following changes in government legislation and new skips, HWRC’s at Emerald Street in Huddersfield and Weaving Lane in Dewsbury can now accept small amounts of household DIY waste which can be disposed of for free.

Examples of DIY waste now accepted include soil, clay and rubble such as bricks, concrete, sand, gravel, hardcore and paving slabs; ceramics, which include tiles, toilets, sinks and bathtubs; and plasterboard. Asbestos can also be disposed of safely at Emerald Street.

Householders must use the online booking system to book their free DIY Waste allocation ahead of their visit. Each household is allocated a maximum of 12 visits per calendar year to dispose of their free DIY waste.

Councillor Tyler Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Highways and Waste said: “I’m delighted that we are expanding our recycling offer in Huddersfield and Dewsbury as well as the recent improvements made at our Meltham site.

“Making our household waste and recycling centres more accessible and giving everyone the opportunity to recycle waste from home improvement/renovation projects will make recycling much more convenient and is a win for everyone.

“By improving our recycling offer, we will see an increase in materials at our recycling centres.”

Details of how to book for a free household DIY waste appointment and information about what materials can be recycled at our HWRC’s is available online at: www.kirklees.gov.uk/HWRC.

The service is available exclusively to residents of Kirklees and a vehicle permit is required when making a booking.

Bookings can be made online up to six days in advance, but same-day bookings are not permitted. Residents are encouraged to arrive at their chosen HWRC up to 15 minutes before the end of their designated time slot, where staff will be available to assist.

Commercial waste cannot be taken to the HWRCs and should be disposed of via a licenced commercial waste collector. If you employ someone to carry out work on your home, any waste that is generated is commercial waste and will not be accepted at the HWRCs, irrespective of who brings it to site, the council explained.

Elsewhere, improvements have recently been implemented at Meltham HWRC, with an additional 20 parking spaces on site helping more people access the site and reduce some waiting times. Access to the skips on site has been improved making it easier for site users to dispose of garden, cardboard, and general waste. Staff are on site to help, direct and familiarise users with the new layout.
