Locals fear for ‘destruction’ of Huddersfield village as 110-home plan revealed
Land in Shepley has been earmarked for more than 100 homes
Huddersfield villagers fear their local area will be destroyed as plans for more than 100 homes are brought to light.
The site in question, referred to as land at Eastfield, Shepley, has been earmarked for up to 110 properties. Developer, Banks Group Ltd has applied for outline planning permission at this stage, meaning that further consents will need to be obtained before the development comes to fruition.
The Design and Access Statement on behalf of the applicant explains that the vision is to construct a neighbourhood within an “extensive network of green space”. The site would come with green corridors, areas of open space and a play area, with 35 per cent of all properties to be “affordable”.
However, existing residents aren’t convinced, concerned the development will cause serious harm to the village.
One objector wrote: “I strongly oppose this development as I believe it will irretrievably destroy the rural character of Shepley. The development is not supported by the existing infrastructure, e.g. educational and health provision, local roads, waste water systems shops etc. There are already large new housing developments in Shepley itself and nearby places, therefore rendering the argument of providing necessary housing invalid.”
Another commented: “I cannot fathom another build in Shepley, especially on an area that should surely be green belt. So many fields and areas of habitat for wildlife have been, and are currently being, destroyed. This is adding- and would add- to sewage and pollution including noise pollution.
“The roads are diabolical throughout Kirklees, but Shepley and immediate surrounding areas are really shoddy. More houses equals more vehicles and further damages to the roads. There isn’t enough road safety in Shepley and another development near the school brings its own problems…”
The developer, on the other hand, says the plans would have benefits for the local area. The supporting statement concludes: “This development will respect and reflect the distinctive character of Shepley, while guiding the area toward a more sustainable future. It will embody the principles of high-quality design, delivering a scheme that is rich in character, diverse in form, and sensitively integrated into its surrounding environment.”
A target date for a decision to be made by Kirklees Council has been set for January 26, 2026.
