New images showing how Huddersfield bus station could look after its multi-million-pound revamp have been released.

Plans for the station’s £27m upgrade, which is being delivered by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Kirklees Council, aim to provide passengers with a more accessible, energy efficient and modern bus station. Designs include a new entrance canopy, cycle parking and improvements to the public space around the bus station.

Proposals also cover better shop fronts, real-time bus and rail information to help with onward journeys, improved safety and security measures, and a ‘Changing Places’ toilet with extra features to meet the needs of people with a range of disabilities. A ‘living roof’ covered in plants, and energy saving features such as solar glass, are also part of the plans.

Since its inception, the scheme has been hit with delays and some aspects of it changed from the original plans. The new-look station was initially expected to be up and running by the end of this year, following the submission of a planning application in the summer of 2023.

However, planning permission was not granted until February 2025, and now further plans to change some elements of the project have been submitted and are awaiting a decision. If approved, the amendments will see the size of the canopy – where the green ‘living roof’ will be located – significantly reduced, with an area of 545sqm metres, rather than 915sqm as was originally the plan.

On top of this, the cycle hub, which was set to house storage racks, lockers and helmet storage, has been axed in this latest application, along with the bin store. Instead, they have been replaced with a dedicated cycle parking area for 32 bikes.

The changes make up part of ‘Phase 2’ of the scheme, with ‘Phase 1’, unaffected by the recent planning application. The first phase is primarily concerned with giving the interior of the bus station a makeover, with new tiles and flooring, seating and better shop fronts among the works included.

Also coming under Phase 1 are the new signs and passenger information screens, and improvements to the security office and drivers’ rest area. In addition, part of the station’s exterior and façade facing Macaulay Square will be rebuilt using natural honed stone during this first phase, to tie in with the sandstone construction of the nearby Victorian buildings.

According to council documents, the reason for the changes are to “optimise” construction costs, material use, and environmental impact. A target date for a decision on the latest plans has been set for September 10, 2025.
