A major road connecting small communities in West Yorkshire has been shut indefinitely for "safety reasons".

The A646 Halifax Road between Charlestown and Hebden Bridge was closed by Calderdale Council on Saturday (December 14th).

Other local towns in the area will be affected, including Todmorden and Mytholmroyd, that make up major transport links between Manchester and Leeds.

In a post on their Facebook account, the council confirmed that both directions of the road were closed until further notice.

The road was closed from the junction at Stony Lane in Charlestown, with diversions now put in place.

Heavy goods vehicles are being diverted onto the nearby M62, while local traffic will be directed through Littleborough on the A58.

Giving their reasons for the closure, the Council said: "The closure is so Yorkshire Water can repair a damaged sewer and will remain close throughout next week. Further updates will follow as soon this period of closure is confirmed."

Calderdale Council have urged motorists to expect "significant disruption" on the road over the next few days.
