Police launch hate crime inquiry over graffiti on Leeds University Jewish building
West Yorkshire Police have launched a hate crime inquiry, after graffiti was found on a building for Jewish students at the University of Leeds.
Police are investigating reports of criminal damage to Hillel House, on Springfield Mount in Leeds.
The Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracey Brabin has posted on X saying: "Vandalism of a Jewish student residence and death threats made towards a Jewish member of staff are deeply concerning."
The MP for Leeds Central has also posted on X, Hillary Benn said: "The abuse and threats being directed at the Jewish Chaplain and his wife and at Jewish students at Leeds University is anti-semitism.
"I’ve contacted the university to ask what they are doing to protect and support Jewish staff and students."
Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Richard Armstead said: “I know that this incident will cause concern for university students and members of the wider Jewish community, and I want to reassure them that this kind of hate will not be tolerated.
“This graffiti is being removed and we are conducting extensive enquiries to identify the person or persons responsible.”
