Leeds election winners

Richard Burgon claimed a Labour hold for the party in his Leeds East seat, with a majority of over 25,000.

Elsewhere, Rachel Reeves also held onto her Labour seat in Leeds West - claiming 27,013 votes.

Labour held onto Leeds Central, with a huge majority for Hilary Benn of over 23,000 votes.

Andrea Jenkyns held onto Morley and Outwood, with a bigger majority than in 2015.

One of the biggest shocks of the night came from Leeds North West. Liberal Democrat MP Greg Mulholland dramatically lost his seat that he'd previously held since 2005. The constituency had one of the biggest increases in the number of people registering to votes.

Fabian Hamilton increased his majority in Leeds North East, gaining an extra 10,000 votes in his constituency.

Alec Shelbrooke also gained on his majority, being re-elected in Elmet and Rothwell.

In the city's most tightly fought seat, Stuart Andrew held his marginal Conservative seat with just 331 votes.

Local reaction

Reacting to the Exit Polls, Labour candidate for Leeds Central Hilary Benn told Radio Aire: "the night is still young and exit polls have been wrong before. We are in Leeds Town Hall counting the votes and will know soon enough if it's right or not."

"One thing is clear, Theresa May and her Tories have fought an awful campaign, considering the position that they started with. She called the election thinking she was going to storm to victory, but if the exit poll is correct it could be very very different...but the night is young."
