From 'tiny 6-year-old' to uniting the sport: Rob Burrow's childhood club shares its memories of a rugby league legend
Featherstone Lions says Rob's parents bought him his own shirt - because they had none small enough to fit him
The childhood club of rugby league legend Rob Burrow has remembered him as ‘cheeky’ and an ‘outstanding talent’ – who shattered the myth of what stereotypical rugby players should look like.
Rob, who grew up in Castleford, joined Featherstone Lions when he was six years old. He went there because some of the other boys on his street did and stayed for the next decade.
We spoke to the club’s president Andy Bell and one of the coaches David Raybould who told us how - despite having to bring his own shirt because they had none small enough to fit him – Rob turned out to be an inspiring player who ‘united the sport’:
The club is opening a book of condolence this Friday and will also hold a minute’s silence at this weekend’s Challenge Cup final event, as well as a round of applause on the 7th minute.
