Former Leeds student 'overwhelmed' by her welcome to the UK after fleeing Ukraine

A woman, who studied at the University of Leeds has been overwhelmed by the reception she received in the UK, after fleeing Ukraine.

Maria Romanenko, who's a Ukrainian journalist, is now safe after escaping with her partner Jez Myers to his home in Stockport.

She said:

"We've been invited to different things, like cafes, Jez's friend came round to bring some brownies that she made, people are offering whatever they can to make me feel welcome.

"People have been very nice, someone gave me flowers."
