Five arrested as Leeds fans celebrate promotion
West Yorkshire Police are reminding people of Covid-19 restrictions
Five people have been arrested as fans celebrated Leeds United's promotion to the Premier League into the early hours.
West Yorkshire Police had urged supporters not to go to the ground and are repeating that warning, with United potentially being crowned Champions depending on results on Saturday or Sunday.
There were reports of damage done to a car by people jumping on it, missiles being thrown at police officers and an entrance to the stadium itself being damaged.
Superintendent Chris Bowen, of Leeds District Police, said: "We have continued to impress upon fans the importance of the COVID-19 Government guidance and our approach remains one of engagement and encouragement.
"An appropriate police response was deployed last night (Friday 17th July) to ensure the safety of all those present with only 5 arrests made for public order and driving offences.
"As the evening progressed, officers worked with stewards to clear the area and this concluded in the early hours.
"Across the weekend, we would urge people to stay mindful of the Government restrictions and remember that the best way to celebrate is in your home.
"The safety of fans and the wider public is our primary concern. We must not lose sight of the fact that Covid19 is still with us and that large gatherings are not permitted.”
