Controlled explosion carried out after suspicious object found near Leeds school
Bomb disposal officers were called to a site near Leeds Road this morning
A controlled explosion has been carried out near to a school in Leeds after police were called to reports of a suspicious device found by a main road.
Smeaton Approach was closed at the junction with Leeds Road just after 08:30BST on Wednesday morning (May 1), around half a mile from John Smeaton Academy.
A bomb disposal squad was called out and a controlled explosion was carried out a short time later.
In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said: "Police received a report of a suspicious object which had been found on land at the junction of Leeds Road and Smeaton Approach, Leeds.
"A cordon was put in place and nearby roads were closed while officers liaised with the Explosive Ordance Disposal (EOD) team.
"The EOD attended and carried out a controlled explosion of the object on site a short time later.
"The cordon has now been lifted and roads have been reopened. "
