New safety measures are set to be installed in Castleford, in a bid to help people feel safer on a key route between the station and the town centre.

A canopy which covers part of Welbeck Street is set to be demolished as part of the plan, as Wakefield Council claims its become a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

New lighting will be installed in the area, along with new CCTV.

Councillor Denise Jeffery, Leader of Wakefield Council, said: “I want everyone coming into Castleford to feel safe and enjoy everything the town centre has to offer.

“Demolishing the Welbeck Street canopy will open up the area, and installing improved lighting and CCTV cameras around the train station will provide additional security and reassurance for anyone using this route.”

Plans are also underway to move the Police Hub inside the indoor market outside onto the High Street, making it easier for people to use it.

Over the 12 months its been in place its had almost 700 visitors, with 69 incidents being reported to officers.
