Captain Tom has been revealed as one of the top choices for children designing stamps, as part of Royal Mail's Heroes Stamp Design Competition.

Captain Tom, a British Army officer and key fundraiser throughout the pandemic, featured on 8% of all the entries recorded. During the peak of the pandemic, he raised almost £33m for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden.

The competition, which launched in April, was started to honour heroes of the pandemic.

The children from Captain Sir Tom Moore’s childhood school, Beckfoot Oakbank, in Keighley, were among those taking part.

Tina Smith, Headteacher, Beckfoot Oakbank School, said: "Our students have really enjoyed taking part in such a creative competition, as a school we feel it is really important to honour the heroes of the pandemic.

"We are really excited to see which eight designs will be picked and we really hope one will have been created by one of our students."

A set of eight Royal Mail stamps will be created from the children’s designs and they will appear on mail items across the UK.

Children aged 4-14 were eligible to create a stamp featuring their hero of the pandemic. 10,000 design were submitted for entry.

Popular designs also included: NHS workers, images of parents and carers, the police force, postal workers, paramedics, shop workers and teachers.
