The brother of a businessman who was murdered during a robbery in Leeds 20 years ago has said he believes there are people out there who know who is responsible.

John Luper was attacked by masked men while walking his neighbour's dog outside his house in Alwoodley in February 2004.

He was dragged back inside and knocked unconscious, while his wife and daughter were tied up.

The robbers, believed to be a group of four or five men, then took ÂŁ100,000 in cash and jewellery, including a rare Cartier watch.

They left John for dead on his living room floor, and have never been caught.

"I will never forgive them"

Two decades on, his brother Toby is making an impassioned plea for anyone with information about what happened to come forward.

He said he would "never forgive" those responsible, adding: "They’re known, the people that did this must be known.

"The people that know them must have known what happened. It's impossible not to."

If a similar thing happened to them, what would they do? How would they behave? Why should it, they've got away with this for 20 years.

“I would like justice. I would like justice for my mother who died on the very day he did. So, five years later. She cried every day. I don't want sympathy, I want justice.

“And these people know. They know. So the person that did it knows. They'll be having nightmares because there will be a knock on the door.

“I will never go away until these people are in the place they deserve to be.”

Specialist teams looking at evidence

West Yorkshire Police said specialist teams are now looking at existing evidence, to see if new clues can be found.

Toby is hoping those responsible can be "brought to justice" through advances in DNA technology.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Damian Roebuck said: "The devastating effects of what happened 20 years ago are still heartfelt with the family of John Luper.

"He was a prominent businessman in the North Leeds area.

"I would urge anyone who, around February or January 2004, knew of persons making inquiries into him and his business dealings to come forward with names.

“After 20 years our allegiances change and misguided loyalty subsides.

"It's now time to come forward with an actual name or names of the people responsible for such a horrible crime.”
