With work about to start on major projects to transform Brighouse centre, business support organisations are stepping up promotion that the town is very much “open for business.”
Works by Esh Construction which are part of the £19.1 million Brighouse Town Deal projects are set to start on Monday, January 12.
The latest works, involving upgrading streets and public spaces with the aim of encouraging people to spend more time, more often, in Brighouse, aim to improve the experience of visiting the town but there will be some disruption while they are carried out.
In all, work is expected to take around 18 months to complete.
Brighouse BID (business improvement district) is redoubling efforts to promote Brighouse and bring in the shoppers and visitors while this is happening.
Project manager for Brighouse BID, Helen Holdsworth, informs members and supporters: “You will have seen signs are now going up for the road closures that begin on Monday in parts of the town centre.”
Ms Holdsworth says the construction company has promised to answer questions about the work.
And Brighouse BID will be stepping up its support for businesses in the town.
“From Monday, we will be launching our ‘Brighouse is still open for business’ campaign to promote as positive a picture of our town as possible – we need people to keep visiting, keep shopping and keep spending and we’ll be doing whatever we can to encourage that.
“We know it will be hard, but let’s do all we can to work together to try and achieve it,” she said.
In the autumn Calderdale councillors heard Esh Construction – appointed to do the work for Calderdale Council and the Brighouse Town Deal Board- will carry out work in three phases, with each area being completed before going on to the next.
The board says schedules are being developed to minimise disruption to the everyday working of the town.
The first phase will focus on the west area of the town, taking in Commercial Street between Gooder Street and Park Street, Briggate between Thornton Square and Commercial Street, and Market Street, West Park Street and Ship Street (scheduled January to summer 2026).
Phase two sees attention switch to the east, taking in Commercial Street between Park Street and Bradford Road, and Park Street, Park Row, King Street and Bradford Road (scheduled summer to winter 2026).
The third phase concentrates on the Bethel Street area, including Bethel Street car park (scheduled winter 2026 to spring 2027).
Information and updates on the project’s progress can be found on Brighouse Town Deal Board’s website at https://www.brighousedeal.co.uk/theplans/publicrealm/updates/ and more about the Brighouse BID plans can be found online at https://www.visitbrighouse.co.uk/open/
Four construction teams will be deployed for each phase with access for pedestrians and shoppers throughout and deliveries maintained for shops and businesses, says the board.
