Bradford teacher makes it's 'abundantly clear' racism has no place in our society
It comes after England players were racially abused for missing penalties in the Euro 2020 final
A Bradford school teacher tell us she's making it "abundantly clear" that racism has no place in our schools or society.
It comes after England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were racially abused for missing penalties in the Euro 2020 final.
After seeing the abuse, Patrice, a secondary school maths teacher and equality champion had a conversation with her equalities team about what they can do as a school in response to the online abuse.
They agreed they should have a whole school message during tutor time, and put a PowerPoint together.
She said:
"It wasn't so much about teaching racism, because that can take quite a bit of time, it was more about addressing what was online and making it very very clear that we as a school are anti-racist and will not stand for it at all and that there is no place for racism in our school or society."
Boris Johnson met with social media companies on Tuesday about the online abuse.
In response Patrice said:
"It needs to be more than just that, if it was something that was mandatory as part of the curriculum, so every school up and down the country was addressing anti-racism and it wasn't optional, and it was a core thing, then I think that is definitely the way forward.
"We need to be starting these things young, so if we get the right mentality and mindset with our young people, then we have a much better hope of the next generation being a lot more inclusive than the current one is."
Since posting the recourse on her social media account, several teachers have gone on to use the PowerPoint with their own students.
