A new report has warned Bradford Council is on the brink of effectively declaring bankruptcy, due to rising costs and demands.

It said without "exceptional" Government support, the authority will have to issue a Section 114 notice.

That could put a stop to any new spending - and may mean the council has to reduce the services it provides to those deemed essential, such as social care and bin collections.

The council is facing a ÂŁ73 million blackhole in its budgets, and may have to look at cutting jobs and selling assets such as buildings to make up the cash.

The local authority has a legal responsibility to make sure its budget is balance at the end of each financial year.

It will set out a proposal for the 2024/25 budget early next year.

Bradford Council Leader Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe said: “Our finances, like many other across the country, are in a perilous position.

“We are being forced to look at all the services that we provide and make extremely difficult decisions and we know these will not be popular and will have an impact on our residents."
