Barnsley man jailed for 6 years after stealing car in Wakefield and crashing it
He broke into a home to steal car keys while the resident was asleep
A Barnsley man has been handed a six year prison sentence after breaking into a home in West Yorkshire, stealing a car, and then crashing it close to his home.
Adam Winter, aged 31, of Brookfield Terrace, was convicted of burglary and theft of a motor vehicle following a trial at Leeds Crown Court.
The keys for a VW Up were taken, along with house keys and a purse, during a break in on Mountbatten Avenue in Wakefield on May 11.
The victim was asleep upstairs at the time.
Around 13 minutes after the break in, which happened just before 3:10am, the car crashed into parked vehicles on High Croft Drove in Barnsley.
Two suspects were inside the car at the time, with Winter being linked to the scene via a vape which was left at the scene.
PC Edward Buede-Fletcher, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “Winter has targeted an address knowing it was likely that there would be someone asleep in the property at the time. We are aware how distressing it is for victims to know that a stranger has been in their home.
“Working together with South Yorkshire Police, we have been able to identify and link Winter to these crimes and ensure he is held accountable for his actions.
“There is still another suspect outstanding and we would urge anyone with information about their identity to come forward. CCTV shows both suspects fleeing the scene following the collision in Barnsley, with the outstanding suspect appearing to have a leg injury.
“If anyone has information about who this second suspect is then they can pass it to Wakefield DCT or give details anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers.”
