A Leeds cafe has taken down a sign saying 'Refugee's Welcome, Everybody Welcome' after a backlash.

Bosses at The Real junk Food Project in Armley painted the sign last Wednesday to show they support people from all walks of life, wherever they have come from.

They did this to highlight their inclusive nature in the context of recent events happening across Europe.

This sign generated anger amongst some locals, with staff turning up to work to find the mural had been painted over in white.

Despite this, there has been a huge online response where organisations from countries all over the world were showing their support for the sign by tweeting it and sharing it on other social media platforms.

Teresa Miligan, Co-Director at The Real Junk Food Project café said: “We weren’t expecting anything like this at all; we just wanted to let people know that our café is for everybody.”

“It’s now painted over, it’s all white and we are going to put a sign up again but are not sure what we will say yet”
