Getting a dog for Christmas is what many of us might be wishing for, but Leeds Dogs Trust warn we should think very carefully before bringing a dog into the family.

They're also urging owners to be aware of some of the hazards Christmas can pose to dogs, such as festive food, grit and frozen rivers.

Kevin Johnson from Leeds Dogs Trust said: "We do see a bit of an increase in people giving dogs up around the March/April time once the dogs are beginning to become a bit more adolescent and those more challenging behaviours start coming in, so this is why it's really important to really consider dog ownership before bringing one into your home."

Leeds Dogs Trust has said it has seen close to last year's record levels of applications from people wanting to get rid of their pet.

Kevin Johnson said: "Watch out for things with artificial sweeteners, mince pies and dried fruits - there's a lot of things that can really upset your dogs' tummies which could result in quite a hefty vet's bill. Make sure you do have emergency vet contact details.

"Wiping their paws after they've been out for a walk, there's going to be more grit on the ground and this is something that can make its way into your dogs paws and cause a lot of problems further down the line. Don't let your dog go walking on frozen ponds and rivers, keep them well away from any substances like antifreeze."
