25% Of Leeds Of Women "Out Of Date" With Smears
A QUARTER of women in Leeds aren't up to date with their smear tests.
New stats released for Cervical Cancer Prevention Week reveal over 100-thousand local women under 50 HAVEN'T been screened in the past 3 and a half years.
The charity Jo's Trust is urging ALL eligible women to get tested, 32 year old Jacqui Cain runs the Leeds support group - after getting the all-clear following a diagnosis of cervical cancer when she was 27.
"In 2010 I has an abnormal cervical screening result. I had successful surgery involving a cone biopsy and lymph node removal.
"At the time of my diagnosis and treatment I felt quite isolated and found it difficult to find information about cervical cancer. She found help through the internet - looking at the Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust website and after getting the all-clear knew she wanted to help others, "I became involved with JCCT last year and attended a fantastic training course to prepare me for becoming a support group leader in Leeds. "I am so proud to be part of such a fantastic organisation and am really looking forward to running the support group in Leeds. The aim of the group is to give women who have been affected by cervical cancer, at all stages, a chance to talk to others that understand what they have been or are going through.
The group is here to support those newly diagnosed, those going through treatment and women post treatment. The group also aims to have regular guest speakers covering various topics linked to cervical cancer alongside various activities during which ladies can have the chance to chat about their own experiences, something I think is invaluable and that I wish had been available during my own diagnosis.
