West Yorkshire Police understands that the Coronavirus lockdown can be a difficult time for everyone, but can be especially worrying if you are a victim of domestic abuse.

As heard on Pulse 1 and Greatest Hits Radio West Yorkshire, domestic abuse remains a priority for the Force and they are still here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, if you need help to escape an abusive relationship.

Assistant Chief Constable Catherine Hankinson said: "You should be reassured; we are here for you and we will remain here for you throughout this period of isolation."

Who can be a victim?

Anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity or sexuality and help is available for everyone.

Many people believe that domestic abuse only involves physical violence, and while this is one common form if abuse, it can also include controlling behaviour, threats, intimidation and harassment. It can take place between intimate partners or family members.

Can victims break Government Coronavirus rules to escape domestic abuse?

Yes, they can. Leaving your home because you are a victim of domestic abuse is a legitimate reason to breach the Government’s ‘Stay at Home’ instruction and you will not get into trouble for doing this.

How do I report domestic abuse?

There are various options available to report domestic abuse and lots of agencies who can give advice and support if you aren’t ready to speak to the Police. There is lots of information and contact details on the West Yorkshire Police website.

You should report any incidents of domestic abuse to the police by calling 101.

In an emergency, when there is a crime in progress or a danger to life, always dial 999.

Click here to report domestic abuse online. This will be dealt with in the same way as a call to 101, but creates an opportunity to make a report in a non-emergency situation without having to speak on the phone.

Silent 999 Calls

If you need to contact the police in an emergency but you aren’t able, or are afraid to speak, you can use the ‘Silent Solution’. You should call 999 and listen to the instructions from the operator.

Safe Spaces

During the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic, if you are experiencing domestic abuse you can visit any Boots store and ask to use their consultancy room, where they can provide you information and support. Click here for more information and to find your nearest Boots pharmacy.
